Concrete Surface Preparation

Before choosing a finish, ask an independent installer to evaluate the concrete. A written preparation plan makes estimates easier to compare and helps you understand what is included.

Questions for the site visit

What is on the slab?

Point out oil, paint, sealers, old coatings, adhesive, and previous repairs. Ask how contamination and existing materials will be evaluated and removed, and whether removal is included in the quote.

How will moisture be assessed?

Ask which moisture tests the proposed system requires, what limits apply, and how the result will affect product selection. A dry-looking surface is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s specified evaluation.

How will the surface be prepared?

Request the preparation method and required surface profile in writing. Ask about edge work, dust control, cleanup, and any areas that cannot be reached by the main equipment. The selected product’s instructions should guide the specification.

What happens to cracks and joints?

Ask the contractor to distinguish repairs from joints that must accommodate movement. Get the repair materials, appearance expectations, exclusions, and any limits of the repair warranty in writing.

Before installation day

Confirm who empties the garage, how access will be managed, and when belongings and vehicles may return. Follow the installer’s product-specific instructions.
